Replacing the Dual USB plug with a 12v Cigarette Socket

Our FUV has a dual 5v USB socket. In anticipation of the 12v battery needing a jump, we replaced it with a 12v cigarette style socket. If your FUV came with a 12v socket, it likely doesn’t connect to the battery directly, making charging difficult, if not impossible. These directions are for you, too.

Trip breaker on right side.

Remove the left side panel (the big panel). In order to remove the panel, we also had to remove our left side front door. To remove doors, ensure your wheels are turned outward so the door can be swung as far as possible in order to allow you to remove it. So your left door will require you to point the wheel all the way to the right.

Disconnect the 1/4” spade connectors for the old dual 5v USB plug (or original 12v socket that doesn’t go directly to the battery). Tie up connectors left in the FUV (2 arrows on right) and remove the socket.
Using an 8mm socket, remove the black lead from battery to prevent an accidental short. Remove the bolt for the red lead from the battery. The red lead can just lay on top of the battery with the bolt removed.

Assemble the new socket by attaching the pigtail. I use a socket that doesn’t have lights on it to keep from draining the 12v battery.

The socket I link to above has ring tongue lug that lays right on top of the matching leads. Slide the bolts through the eyelets of the lead and pigtail and screw each one into the battery.

Tie wrap it all to make it look nice and put the left side panel back on. Stick your door back on if applicable.
